Fusion: Engaged

This week at Fusion, we closed out an incredible 2010 by talking about what it means to be engaged in the story God is telling.

As post-modern Christians, it can be really easy for us to view the world in a neatly compartmentalized way. School fits in a box. Work fits in another box. Relationships fit in still another box. Sometimes, we even put our view and expectations of God in a box.

Any god that can fit inside one of our boxes is no God at all, but merely a poorly constructed idol.

In the first century, there were a number of Greek philosophers who debated day and night over which box contained god. As Paul made his way around Athens, he encountered a lot of these men. They were so intrigued by the Jesus that Paul spoke of that they invited him to come speak at their auditorium.

Paul looked around at all of the different idols scattered around the room, and noticed that there was an altar with the inscription "To The Unknown God." Seeing this, he speaks to the group of men, engaging them about something they already kind of understand.

"So you are ignorant of the very thing you worship—and this is what I am going to proclaim to you. 24 “The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. 25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else."
-Acts 17:23-25

Paul is making a huge point here... God doesn't dwell in temples built by human hands. God isn't a homeless guy in need of shelter. God made the world, the ever expanding universe, and everything in it.

Simply put, God doesn't fit inside of a box.

The story of creation is a God story. God made you and me and everything in the universe to tell a story... His Story.

We are involved in the story of God whether we choose to be or not, whether we like it or not.

However, the blessing for us comes in choosing to be engaged in every moment in the story God is telling.

This is the point Paul makes again as he writes to the church in Philippi.

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.
-Philippians 2:12-13

Work it out...

The work of our salvation is waking up to a bigger story and engaging in that story at every single moment of our brief lives.

How will you choose to be engaged, today?
